Javastraat.cloud is an interactive data visualisation project exploring how social media shapes the visibility of places in the city. Using Instagram posts made on Amsterdam’s Javastraat between 2010 and 2021, the project shows how different businesses and parts of the street become unevenly represented online. Posts can be explored through hashtags, account size, likes and objects detected with machine vision.
‍
‍I worked on the artistic concept and data processing for the project. My role included building and managing the datasets and running machine vision analyses on the collected images. The interactive website was developed together with Ingo Valente and Sjoerd ter Borg as part of the collective Aesthetics of Exclusion.
